VaYifga Bamaqom – Jacob Chanced Upon The Place

Mixed media

Splashes of color thrown upon the boot then anchored at "the place", hamaqom, where Jacob first encountered God at the House of God, (Beth-El) at the gate of heaven (Shaar HaShamayim). The boot is planted on a mirror, literally reflecting the gate of heaven (Genesis 28: 11, ff.)

In the second version, "the place" is an abstract sculpture made of resin fragments and lead. A ladder extends from the piece into the branches of the mulberry tree anticipating Jacob's dream of angels ascending and descending. The ladder marks "the place", the ground of the sacred center. Its head reaches the gate of heaven, thus bridging the gap between earth and heaven.
