The Bush Keeps Burning
הסנה בוער ולא אוכל

Mixed media (glass, wood, copper), 1991
At the home of Debbie and Etan Milgrom, Los Angeles

The biblical burning bush combines two elements: growth and light, two of God’s life giving attributes. I added the element of sound conveyed by the glass mobile that chimes with movement against the wooden element that is shaped like an enormous ear. Growth and light eventually combined in the menorah (the Tree of Light/ Life) which is both the basic Jewish symbol and also that of the State of Israel.

The wooden piece was found as is; the copper plate comes from an old computer lab; the glass beads from a salvage dump at 6th and Gilman in Berkeley and the growth element, a dried plant seeking a new life from the collection of Elizabeth Oppenheim.
