The Breaking of the Vessels

The flattened roll of sticky black tape scraped from a pavement near our apartment recalls a stale and uncreative period in a sterile high rise apartment building in Washington, D.C. in the fall of '94. We were scholars- in-residence in a community isolated from any meaningful context. I was hungry to create and gathered stuff that lay dormant.
When we returned to Israel the roll of tape became the sephirot in the kabbalistic creation story where the vessels of light shatter bringing evil into the world, the shards that must be reassembled by us who do tikkun olam, repairing the world.
